"Passage
of the [sales tax] referendum would allow politicians to avoid budget trade-offs
by handing over taxing and debt-issuing powers to an unelected mini-government.
What's next -- new mini-governments for universities or parks in regions that
are unhappy with Richmond's budget allocations? Rather than balkanizing state
spending, let's keep government in Virginia as simple and transparent as possible
and reject the sales tax referendum." - Chris Edwards, Cato Institute

Background
On November 5th, 2002, northern Virginia voters will decide whether to increase
the sales tax by 11 percent (from 4.5% to 5%). This increase could raise $5 billion
over 20 years to pay for transportation projects. Of that money, $2.8 billion
would be allocated to a project
list defined by legislation. Ten smart growth, conservation and bicycling
organizations have launched a campaign
to urge voters to Vote NO on November 5th. Look at who stands to
benefit from the tax referendum, and what it really means for commuters.

"Contrary to the
claims of some developers, there's plenty of unused space close by Metro stations
-- not only in Prince George's County and the District, but even in Fairfax County,
near the Vienna Metro, for example." - Marc Fisher, The Washington Post
