Problems with the Sales Tax Hike Tracing the Campaign Dollars ( Questions Need to be Answered There are Better Solutions The Tax Does Not Cover the Full Cost of the Projects The sales tax would raise $5 billion to start new projects but it would not pay to finish them! In fact, there are no estimates in the referendum for how much these projects will cost to complete. How much more would we have to pay and where would the money come from? Another tax increase? Only $2.8 Billion Is Accounted For, Where Would the Rest Of The Money Go? The project list ads up to only $2.8 billion out of a $5 billion sales tax package. This is the bonded portion of the sales tax. The remaining $2.2 billion would be cash to spend on projects not listed, including the "techway" that Governor Warner supports. One study shows the "techway" would dump 100,000 cars per day onto Route 7, the Fairfax County Parkway and local roads. There Has Been No Analysis To See If The Projects Will Reduce Traffic Congestion The sales tax referendum language short circuits the normal safeguards that require VDOT to demonstrate the benefits of road projects. It Won't Work - There Will Actually Be More Traffic As New Roads Open New Land To Development Road projects in the project list will increase development further west, worsening cut-through traffic as commuters drive to job centers in D.C. and the inner suburbs. The widening of Route 7 in Loudoun will provide only temporary relief while opening the door to a flood of new development applications tied to the new road capacity. The Western Bypass (Route 234 Bypass / 659 Relocated) & the Tri-County Parkway will open rural areas of Loudoun to development. |
