"For
me, the most telling difference between the two sides is this fact: More than
half of the money that is pouring into the Yes campaign comes from real estate
and construction businesses -- developers, home builders and all the various other
interests that profit from sprawl." - Marc Fisher, The Washington Post, 10/29/02
Who
Stands to Benefit from the Sales Tax Referendum?
Donations
of more than $500 makeup 97% of the money raised by Citizens for Better Transportation
to pass the tax increase. 42% of funds were derived from the top 4 donors alone.
The top 12 donors provided 74% of funding. Of those 12, 9
represent the real estate/construction industry. Totals exceed 100% due to
rounding.

Commuters Lose - Developers Win
In August, Prince William County approved an additional 5000 houses and 16 million
square feet of office development at Gainesville - that's ½ of Tyson's
Corner and on top of thousands of homes and commercial development already in
the pipeline. This will consume any gains made by widening I-66 with your tax
dollars.
Last year, Prince William County approved thousands more houses and millions
of square feet of commercial development at Southbridge. Combined with continuing
development in Stafford, Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg, this will consume
any gains from expanding I-95 or Route 1 with your tax dollars.
Developers have been the primary contributors to the misnamed "Citizens
for Better Transportation," the booster group for the tax increase... see
for yourself.
Without Better Growth Management, Widening Highways Won't Work
We all know what happened in Los Angeles. If you build it, it will come - more
sprawl development that is. We need a commitment from the development industry
and our elected officials to growth management and better planning, before raising
our taxes.
