About the No Sprawl Tax Coalition

We are individual citizens and ten smart growth, conservation and bicycling organizations concerned about the quality of life in Northern Virginia. Vested interests would like us to believe the sales tax referendum will solve our transportation woes. We believe otherwise. Participants include:

Audubon Naturalist Society
For 100 years the Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States, Inc. has inspired the people of the Nation's Capital and environs to love and respect the gifts of our natural inheritance.

Coalition for Smarter Growth
The Coalition for Smarter Growth is made up of over 40 organizations working to fight sprawl and promote livable communities and transportation choices in the Washington DC region. We are dedicated to preserving quality of life in the Washington Region for current and future generations. We believe that suburban sprawl is contributing to higher taxes in developing jurisdictions and to disinvestment and blight in older communities.

Fairfax Coalition for Smarter Growth
The Fairfax Coalition for Smarter Growth, a volunteer non-profit citizens’ organization, believes that urban sprawl and its attendant traffic congestion in Fairfax County have reached a critical juncture. The Coalition advocates action now to implement more sensible transportation and land use policies that will reduce our dependence on automobiles, increase our use of mass transit, create pedestrian-friendly communities in Fairfax County, and preserve our remaining open spaces.

Piedmont Environmental Council
The Piedmont Environmental Council is dedicated to promoting and protecting the Virginia Piedmont's rural economy, natural resources, history and beauty. Our programs include land conservation -- preserving the land and open space by supporting and promoting land conservation easements & other innovative solutions, land use -- promoting best use of available land and intelligent land use planning, and county by county programs -- addressing local issues of importance with local staff on the ground in 6 offices.

Sierra Club-Virginia Chapter
The Sierra Club's grassroots advocacy has made it America's most influential environmental organization. Founded in 1892, we are now more than 700,000 members strong. The Virginia Chapter consists of thirteen local groups throughout Virginia.

The Virginia Bicycling Federation promotes bicycle access, safety, and education throughout Virginia as the unified voice of Virginia's bicyclists, bicycling organizations, and bike-related businesses.

Voters To Stop Sprawl
Voters To Stop Sprawl is a nonpartisan citizens' organization dedicated to electing candidates for public office who are committed to stopping overdevelopment in Loudoun County. VSS recognizes the negative impacts of sprawl on schools, taxes, traffic, open space and the environment and helps voters identify the best, most dedicated and trustworthy anti-sprawl candidates, regardless of political party, and helps them get elected to office.

Washington Area Bicyclist Association
The mission of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association is to create a healthier, more liveable region by promoting bicycling for fun, fitness and affordable transportation, advocating better bicycling conditions and transportation choices for a healthier environment, and educating children, adults and motorists about safe bicycling.
